Mappa: New Narratives of Cornwall

The Institute of Cornish Studies is introducing Mappa: an innovative interactive digital map and communication tool, designed to provide fresh insights into Cornwall, its communities, economy, culture and future.

Cornwall: An Alternative View

Cornwall is often portrayed as either a picturesque tourist destination or an economically stagnant rural area, with much of its broader reality overlooked. While its natural beauty and economic challenges are well-known, Cornwall is also a dynamic center of creativity, and innovation. Our objective is to broaden the common narratives of Cornwall by highlighting often-overlooked advancements and sharing more detailed information about the county.

Mappa and Research

There is a healthy research community in Cornwall, however, research is typically disseminated through specialised channels like journals and academic reports, which seldom reach the general public. Consequently, legacy and social media are primary sources of local information. The decline in local journalism over the past decade has left towns and villages with reduced access to essential local news. At the same time, the growth of social media has also seen an increased spread of misinformation and disinformation.

About the Institute of Cornish Studies

The Institute of Cornish Studies (ICS) is a research institution dedicated to the study and promotion of Cornwall. The ICS plays a significant role in fostering an understanding of Cornwall's unique cultural heritage, social issues, economy and regional identity. Through Mappa, we’ll not only share our research but also highlight key studies about Cornwall. Our goal? To make reliable, fact-checked information about life, work and culture engaging and accessible; for one and all.

This project is part-funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. Cornwall Council has been chosen by Government as a Lead Authority for the fund and is responsible for monitoring the progress of projects funded through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly.
